Bronx River ~ Sound Shore Audubon Field Trips for 2005-2006

If you're interested in any of the upcoming scheduled field trips, please contact either Andrew Block at 337-1229 or Doug Bloom at 834-5203 (evening) or 713-0630 (day) for further information. It's important to call in advance so that trip leaders can ensure adequate transportation and for overnight trips to reserve accommodations. Please call the leader at least two days in advance to help us with our field trip plans.

 Meet at 8:00 a.m. Scarsdale Village Hall to drive to Jamaica Bay for shore birds and water fowl.

Saturday, September 24           INTRODUCTION TO HAWKS  

Lenoir Preserve, Yonkers  

 

Meet at Lenoir at 9:00 a.m. for slide show followed by Hawk watch. This is a cosponsored trip with Hudson River Audubon and also Central Westchester Audubon. Call Mike Bochnik for details at 237-9331

    Site TBD

Great gathering place for ducks and geese heading south or stopping for the winter months, plus late shorebird migrants.  Meet at 8:30 a.m. Scarsdale Village Hall. This trip will be to either Hook Mountain, Butler Sanctuary in Bedford or Greenwich Audubon Center.

 Monday, December 26 (All Day)              ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

Join 50,000 other birders all over the country as they conduct this annual bird census.  Help with our count area (Bronx-Westchester Count) as we try to determine what local trends are occurring among local bird populations. Leader: Doug Bloom   Eves:  834-5203.

Sunday, January 8, 2006                 SEA BIRDS 

    Montauk Point Area

Great gathering place for ducks and geese heading south or stopping for the winter months, plus late shorebird migrants.  Meet at 6:30 a.m. Alcids and other wintering sea birds that come in closer. Also seals.

Trip Report

57 species were observed on the Sunday, January 8, Montauk field trip. The day started at 6:30 a.m. with snow showers in Scarsdale, light rain and hail on Montauk Point before becoming sunny and warm. In the air and water surrounding the lighthouse, participants saw eiders, scoters, grebes, loons, gannets, mergansers, gulls, ducks and seals. Stops on the way home, included Teddy Roosevelt County Park in Montauk and Nepeague harbor in Amagansett to see goldeneyes, Dunlin, Black-bellied plovers, Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed hawks and at the pond in Eisenhower Park, Nassau County to spot a rare Greater White-fronted goose and a Barnacle goose, a lifer for trip leader Doug Bloom.

Pelham Bay   

Meet 8 a.m. at the far left end of the Orchard Beach Parking lot. On this 1- 1 ½ hour daytime owl prowl, we'll be hoping to see Saw-whet, Long-eared, Great Horned and Barred owls. (Cosponsored with Central Westchester Audubon and the Wild Bird Center)

 Saturday, February 11, 2006                      LOOKING FOR EAGLES

    Croton Point Park    

Meet at Wild Bird Center 400 Central Park Ave, Scarsdale at 8:00 a.m. and be back before noon. We'll see Bald Eagles and possibly Golden Eagles. As always, we'll have the spotting scope for good close-up looks.

 February 17-19, 2006                      CAPE ANN WEEKEND

    Cape Ann   

Leave Friday morning and return before Sunday dinner. Our northern most waterfowl trip, we'll be looking for wintering ducks and alcids, including Dovekies, Razorbills, Puffins, King Eiders and Harlequins. Call by Jan. 29 to reserve space.

South Jersey   

In the woods, fields and ponds of Columbia County, N.J., this day trip will seek out the early migrants returning north. Many species, including eagles, owls and maybe Sandhill cranes, can be expected.

WARD POUND RIDGE COUNTY PARK .  Route 35 & 121 South Cross River , NY (914) 864-7317.  

Meet at 8:00 AM.. The largest of our County Parks provides a variety of settings with wildflowers attractive to many species of butterflies.  This park also provides great nesting habitat for bluebirds. Meet at the entrance booth to Ward Pound Ridge  (there is a park entrance fee).
